If you're into walking, trekking
or mountain biking, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation
has a good number of nature trails.
Some of the best are in the Akamas National Park and Troodos area.
Head for the Adonis and the Aphrodite nature
trails which leave from the Baths of Aphrodite, near Pafos. The best time
is from December to April before the plants die off from the effects of
the hot sun.
The Troodos Mountains
The Artemis trail around Chionistra gives wonderful views of forested
peaks. In spring, the hillsides turn pink with the blossom from the apple,
peach and cherry trees.
Pafos Forest
If you go walking from Panagia into the western Troodos, you might be
lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the shy mouflon, a wild sheep native to
Cyprus, and the emblem of Cyprus Airways.
Akrotiri Salt Lake
Surrounded almost entirely by the RAF base, the Akrotiri Salt Lake is a
nature lover's dream. Flamingos nest here from December until April. There
is also an immensly rich flora
here;many different types of orchids
flower in the spring.
There are local companies who organise walks and
